BC for Black Bear

Heading out next week for a 7 day spot and stalk hunt in BC. Taking my new Bowtech Insanity which is shooting my 100 gr G5 Stryker's very well out to 55 yards. We're allowed a second bear and we have a wolf tag so I purchased a .308 to take along as well. I'm still in the process of getting it set up with the correct rings and bases. Hopefully that will all come together quickly so I can send a few down range before Monday. Also checked the 10 day outlook and it's supposed to be in the high 60's with 60% chance of rain the first few days. Now I've got to get a new set of light weight rain gear. I'm looking at the Sitka, MTO 50 from Cabela's and River's West. Any real life experience's you guys can share. I have the River's West Ambush set, but it's way too heavy for mid 60's. I also have a bunch of Sitka gear, but none of their rain stuff. $450 seems a little pricey for what I am looking for. Light and quiet.

Forum: Roadtrips

I work part time at our training center as a crane instructor and riding around our 150 acre campus I remembered I want to snap pictures of this STEAM SHOVEL. This crane is just at 100yrs old. The buzzards (bird chit on top of the boiler stack) have roosted on and in this crane for as far back as I can remember and I have been here 19 yrs. The picture of the 2 cranes in our gravel pit are late 50's and run great and fully functional. And the last picture is of some of my students on our new/more modern equipment.

#2 Daughter wanted to fight MOSQUITO'S again so JR and I set out to find her a bird yesterday. I went to a farm that we hadn't visited yet and was about to leave when I could barely make out a gobble in the distance. We stopped on the hardtop on the way to a HARDEES biscuit and he was on fire, roosted a couple hundred yards thru the woods from where we had just been. A quick loop in a creek bottom and we were sittin there hearin him thunder off at every little noise. I pulled out Pusey's slate and gave a sweet couple yelps , HE DID GO OFF THEN! Jr had my 870 and she held his BENELLI, I was there to call and enjoy the show. He had the longest gobble I had ever heard and thought there might be 2 birds. I mean it sounded like he was goin to pass out, JR even laughed at it. He hit the ground and came to about 75 yards and hung up for just 5 min or so until I called again THEN HE DOUBLE AND TRIPLE GOBBLED! Here he come 45 yards out and swings to her side, I stop him at 33 yards and he peeks over the greenbriar BLAM. He disappeared in the briars, we ran up and JR yells out DEAD BIRD! He was on his back not a quiver then a short DEATH FLOP. I TOLE HER THAT'S THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK! Then I explained that it's rarely that easy but IT SURE WAS SWEET! She's got back into huntin after a 8 year or so hiatus and she was really pumped I MEAN THAT BARREL WAS SHAKIN LIKE CRAZY! THANKS CYPRESS FOR THE CALL. SORRY FOR POOR PIX, CLOUDS AND DRIZZLE DIDN'T HELP JUST TOO DARK IN THAT CREEK BOTTOM AT FLYDOWN.

TALE OF THE TAPE: 19-1/2#, 10-1/2" BEARD(HAD BEARD ROT), 1-1/8" SPURS NOT BAD FOR A FIRST BIRD

Forum: The Roost

First Bird on my own...

And it was a good one....I think! Friday afternoon, I setup in an area that I had heard birds gobbling but never saw them. After several hours of intermittent calling, I heard what I can only describe as a scratching noise, almost like that of a raccoon coming down a tree. A slight turn of the head and there stands a turkey! Both of us froze, after what seemed an extremely long time he finally moved his head. In fact he stood still so long with nothing moving that I started to think someone was screwing with me by putting a decoy up during one of my naps! Problem with this bird is he came in to my right and slightly behind me. With the gun across my lap there was no way to move, especially while getting the death stare. As luck would have it he started to walk from my right to left and had to pass behind two big trees. As soon as his head disappeared I was able to swing the gun up, but I guess I made some type of noise as the bird didn't come out from behind the tree but started clucking like crazy and walking in a little circle. After several minutes of that he stopped and stepped out, I guess to see why the hen he expected didn't respond, well that brief minute was all it took. A load of six's finished the job and I had my first spring gobbler on my own. Odd thing though. everyone has always told me turkeys won't cross fences, creeks etc. Not true, this bird crossed over a ravine that is at least feet deep. And no he didn't fly over he actually walked across the ravine on a pine log that spans the ravine from one side to the other which explains the scratching sound. Never saw that one coming! Anyhow the statistics: 19 lbs. 10 inch beard with 1 inch spurs! Sorry for the poor pic, but it was tough to take a pic of myself with a cell phone!
Forum: The Roost

The first step was to determine public opinion, especially within Western Maryland. Today, results of a statewide survey (see link below) – conducted on behalf of the Partnership by Virginia-based Responsive Management and financed solely by Montana-based Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation – were released that found three out of four Maryland residents support the reintroduction of this once-native species.

http://www.dnr.state.md.us/dnrnews/pressrelease2012/051512a.asp

Forum: Campfire
