Got my Black Bear notifications for sign up the other day , I'm going to have to just buy a bonus point this year . Shoulder surgery is going to keep me from going if I were to be drawn . I think I have 10 or 11 points now , been applying since they opened bear season. Goodluck to all that get drawn

I just signed up!! Is there a way to see how many preference points you have? I have been signing up for a while, but didn’t know about the point system when I first started entering for the drawing.

This is the first year I have entered. Can someone explain the point system? Sometimes I feel the DNR’s explanation at things is the most difficult to understand and to vague to interpret.

I've signed up for the bonus points every year since they implemented it and have signed up for the drawing since day one. Would love to find out how many points or what my % for drawing a tag would be. I need to coordinate the time off to go and know some decent places but holding off until it's almost a guaranteed drawn so I could hunt the entire season.

BBB- Tore the biceps tendon off the bone last weekend working on the property in WV. Damn near made me throw-up when it popped! Orhto said at my age just leave it as is and pain will be under control in 4 weeks with some loss of strength and a "Pop Eye" muscle or he can go in and screw it back on the bone with a 4-6 month rehab. I took the first option. Feeling better already...thank God for Xbows!...or this season would be over before it starts!

It's my understanding and this is from talking to them , all names are in the system ( hat sorta speak) for every year you have entered they put your name in said hat . So if Joe shmo has entered for the first time he gets 1 name tag in hat and someone like me gets my name thrown in hat 10 times . Of course it's all computer generated, as far as finding out how many points you have , I believe you could call and ask they have been giving points since it started basically.

Their are guys who have drawn 2-3 times and others who haven't drawn yet like me , in my opinion if you draw you shouldn't be able to draw again for two years. To give others a better shot at it . JMO

If you get on Compass it tells you how many preference points you have.

I wonder if the points expire.  I had applied in years past (never drawn), yet compass doesn't show any points for me.  Maybe you have to buy consecutive years?

"Only choose this product if you are NOT willing to hunt during this year’s black bear hunt. A Preference Point CANNOT be used to enter this year’s black bear lottery. Purchasing a Preference Point ensures that you will not lose any prior Preference Points you have accrued and will give you an additional entry in a future black bear lottery"

This is directly from the compass website when clicking on preference point.

"By purchasing a Black Bear Lottery Application, you will be entered in this year’s black bear lottery. You may NOT purchase both a Lottery Application and a Preference Point."

This is directly from the compass website when clicking on Black Bear Entry Application.

I am guessing that you need to purchase a preference point in any given year you plan on not entering the bear hunting lottery just to keep all the other preference points from expiring. I guess if your number is not pulled in gets added to your preference point total for future years. Can anyone confirm this?

If you get picked you forfeit points.Every year you have to purchase a point or enter the lottery.Every year your points build up.If you fail to enter lottery or purchase a point even if you don't plan to hunt.
You forfeit alive to be concurrent. points.

I think it sucks that if you skip a year you lose all your points.

Yea bud you have to apply or buy each year to keep your points , miss one year and you start over and is why I'm buying one this year , of course I did the same thing last year to not lose all the years I have acquired.

Ummm I think the lottery chance is only like 10 bucks. Great public land hunts for bears, no bait, trail cams waste of time just find scat and tracks. I personally think the state has it right this time👍🏻

Why bother? Go next door to PA. Buy a license and hunt anywhere in a million acres of public land full of Bear.
