Wife Murdered After Couple Carjacked

Last Update: 12:14 pm
A young wife was murdered Friday morning after police say she and her husband were carjacked in New Jersey and forced to drive to Maryland.

The couple was driving from New York to their home in Virginia when they were carjacked by an African American male carrying a knife and a handgun somewhere in New Jersey. The suspect then drove the couple's car to Kent County.

State Police spokesperson Greg Shipley says the car stopped in the area of Route 290 four miles north of Route 301 where the suspect then murdered the wife, dropped off her body by a nearby farmhouse, and assaulted the husband. The husband was able to escape and run into a nearby home where the residents helped him call 9-1-1.

The suspect fled in a unknown direction and police say a manhunt is underway.

Police are on the lookout for a 2007 blue Honda Accord with Virgina tags 876-718. If you were driving in the area of Route 290 between 1 and 6 this morning and may have any information you are asked to immediatly call police at the Centreville State Police Barrack at 410-758-1101.

Shipley says the couple is in their 20's but he will not release their names until the families are notified. The husband was treated and released at Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown. He is currently working with police to assist in the investigation.

Was the husband hogtied or handcuffed?

No way some mofo is going to murder my wife, have time to drag her to a farmhouse, and then come back to assault me and then I escape.

Something sounds awfully rotten here.

I agree with you there. If it did happen that is terrible. But I am with you, there is no fricken way that a man that loved his wife would allow that to happen.

Update

CRUMPTON, Md. (AP) -- A woman was found dead on the side of a rural Eastern Shore road Friday and her injured husband told investigators they were carjacked on the New Jersey Turnpike, according to Maryland State Police.

The St. Mary's County man in his 20s told police he and his wife, also in her 20s, were carjacked early Friday as they drove home from Brooklyn, where they own another home, police spokesman Greg Shipley said.

Shipley said he told officers the man forced them to drive to the Crumpton area in Kent County, where he bound the man's hands and feet on Route 290, four miles north of Route 301.

He told police his wife tried to escape then but the carjacker caught and killed her in a rural area where homes are at least a quarter-mile apart, Shipley said. Shipley didn't say how police believe the woman died and her name is being withheld pending notification of her family.

The husband said the man armed with a knife and gun drove away around 1 a.m. in the couple's blue Honda Accord with Virginia registration: 876-718.

The husband, who had a knife wound when police arrived, told officers that he was able to free himself after several hours and called 911 about 6 a.m. from a nearby home.

Police found the body of the woman a few minutes' walk away from that house.

The New York City Police Department, New Jersey State Police and Kent County Sheriff's Office are also investigating, Shipley said.

Just watched this story on the news and something just doesn't add up...if it did happen as the husband stated it is a horrible story ....but the husband says the carjacker killed his wife but only used duct tape to tie him up and drove off...I think the police will be looking very hard at his story

Police Say Carjacking And Murder Staged

CRUMPTON, Md. (WJZ) ¯

Maryland State Police say what was once believed to be a carjacking and murder was staged.

Police say they've now charged 28-year-old Ryan Holness with the murder of his wife 26-year-old Serika Dunkley Holness.

He's been processed at the Centreville Barracks and will be taken before a court commissioner in Kent County later tonight for a bond hearing.

Ryan Holness had told police that he and his wife were carjacked while returning to Maryland from New York where they had been visiting family.

The woman's body was found along a road near Crumpton.

Weijia Jiang has the very latest on the police investigation into the horrific crimes.

Authorities up and down the east coast had spent part of the day searching for a killer, a man who they had thought was armed with a knife and a gun.

They now say that the terror which unfolded along Rt. 290 in Crumpton, Kent County was staged.

A masked carjacker did not bind Mr. Holness' hands and feet with duct tape, as he originally told police.

They say instead the man killed his wife and tried to make it look like they had both been the victims of a crime.

Police say the woman suffered what appear to be have been stab wounds to the upper body, though they await an autopsy set to be performed in Baltimore.

Just hours after killing his wife Ryan Holness showed up at a local house, claiming he needed help.

"He came up here and knocked on the door, he didn't start yelling or anything. He just came up here and knocked on the door," says Robert Rolfe. "He said he'd been robbed. He had a couple knots on his head and he was shaking real bad."

Police say Ryan Holness was treated at the Kent/Queen Anne's Hospital for injuries he sustained.

He became a suspect when police tried to reconcile his statements with those of other witnesses.

The bizarre violent crime in such a quiet area has shaken many in the area to their core.

In addition to Maryland State Police, Kent County deputies, Maryland Natural Resources Police and allied law enforcement were involved in the investigation.

Troopers continue to search for the couple's 2007 blue Honda Accord. The car is believed to have Virginia registration plates reading either 876-718, or KDZ-1408. This investigation and the search for the vehicle will continue throughout the weekend. Anyone with information about this murder or the missing vehicle, is urged to contact Maryland State Police at the Centreville Barracks, at 410-758-1101.

Police also say that Ryan Holness is a member of the Navy assigned to Patuxent River Naval Air Station in St. Mary's County, and that the couple has children who are safe and were not involved in the violent attack.

The Holness' had been married since 2003.

Police find missing car in Eastern Shore murder case

Staff and wire reports • June 6, 2009

The 2007 blue Honda Accord was found in northwest Washington, D.C., late Friday night. Police had it towed to the Forestville barracks and planned to search it after obtaining a warrant today.

Police said they don't know how the leased car ended up in Washington.

Ryan D. Holness, 28, was charged with murder in the death of Serika Dunkley Holness, 26, whose body was found on the side of a rural Eastern Shore road earlier Friday. Holness had told police that he and his wife were carjacked while returning to Maryland from New York where they had been visiting family.

State police said information provided by Holness throughout the day did not match that provided by witnesses and evidence found at the scene.

Holness, of Lexington Park, was charged with first- and second-degree murder and was being held pending a bond hearing, said state police.

Police said the husband told officers he was forced to drive to the Crumpton area in Kent County, where the carjacker forced him out of the car, and bound his hands and feet. Holness said his wife tried to escape but the carjacker ran her down and killed her before driving away, state police said.

The husband, who was wounded when police arrived, told officers he freed himself after several hours, unsuccessfully tried to flag down motorists and eventually called 911 about 6 a.m. from a nearby home.

Police found the wife's body a few minutes' walk away from that house.
