Tim's been doing all of my work for about 8 years now. His waterfowl is as good as anyone out there, only difference in my opinion is that he tends to be more creative with his poses and habitats then most. The canvasback in the picture is mine he recently finished up for me and it looks great! As far as the bill on the gadwall Demon that is the one that came with the duck. it's an immature drake, they don't get that dark brown/black bill until they reach maturity. |

Reply with quote | #23 | Dont get me wrong, I wasnt questioning the quality of the mount...
It was just interesting to see the hen looking bill. I have shot plenty of Gaddies, and havent really noticed too many drakes with a bill like that, even juvies... They dont really have a dark brown bill either, it is generally jet black... or grayish black...
I can see that he is not that well colored in his head, and his grey is a little muted...
Looks good though, and I will keep him in mind next time I need a good mount....

I agree that Martins Taxidermy does good work and they are nice people, but I wouldn't give them any birds if you want them back in less than a year. I dropped off a duck in December '07 and it's not done and dropped off a turkey in May '08 and it's not back yet. I have spoken to them but were told that Mr. Martin has been out of town alot with work and can't get the mounts done. I was told in June that they'd be done "in a couple weeks". I called back in September and was told the same thing. Again, I like them as people and they do good work, but timeliness is not a strong suit. |

Reply with quote | #27 | Honestly , while some of the taxidermists mentioned do a good job, my next mount will be sent away to a very good taxidermist.
Look on the refuge forums: taxidermy forums and see soem of the work done on there. It is amazing. I feel like ducks are hard to do because of the detail they prtray in real life. I have a can done that looks great, for a freezer burned bird, but I think if i am going to get something special done, I will send it off to someone who only does waterfowl.
I have seen a couple mounts Derek has of a gadwall and a black duck that are amazing, and extremely tru to life. I just dont think taxidermists in this area sho specialize in deer, and mammals as well as ducks can spend the time neccesary to recreate mother nature, and since the pricing is very similar to sending the bird away, especially if you have to drive any distance, why not send it to a person who does work with waterfowl, everyday?

i was actually thinking about taking classes if i can find them and would like to specialize in waterfowl. does anyone know of any places that offer classes or do i need to buy the materials and just screw up a bunch of my own learning how to do it? |
