Seemed like lots of years ago it was almost "shoot till your happy" as far as limits on them. Now 6/year with all weapons. We just don't see them as much out in the marsh either as years ago. |

Reply with quote | #17 | Concerning Sika Eating Phragmites, Are they really eating the 12 foot tall stuff of just the young shoots on the edges in the spring. If they get a belly full of Pharg, why do corn and milo in feeders work SO well to draw Sika. No doudt they live in it, but are they eating this or the short grass on the edges of the marsh which is quickly disappearing. Almost 100 years in this country and they stayed in one county for 85% of the time. Why are they expanding now cause the marshlands are not increasining in size?
This has been a banner year. Two six points at our club so farm and lot's of other small stuff/hinds. We self-impose a three sika limit and it seems to work well so far. We have property on Maple Dam and Andrews Roads, a private parcel inside Blackwater Along with Taylors, Hoopers, Madison, etc. I talk to alot of guys are they "seem" like the numbers hold steady. But I would really like to see some science behind it.

Reply with quote | #18 | Drew- they only eat the green stuff on the phrag- the little shoots that come up, and the leaves off the big grass. Watched one munch phrag leaves for 30 minutes in early muzzleloader. Doesn't mean they don't get a preference for grain, but I question that sometimes. There are plenty of fat sika stags that are killed on our place every year that were never seen on the feeder cams. And some belly up to the bar every night, usually around midnight! Of course, when the marsh browns up and the corn is still flowing, you get bigger numbers on the feeders. Outlaw corn for deer, and you'll see them spread out a little more, I'd guess, but I would expect to see 90% of the deer stay in the marsh. They just love it as much as I do!
