My duck hunting rig, lower unit on 25 HP merc, has milky oil, I know this is not good.  anyone know of a good mechanic in southern Maryland?

Any help appreciated, I don't have tons of money to throw on this.  It is a 1987, 25 HP tiller drive short shaft mercury outboard.

Don't know a mechanic, or how to fix it, but you've got a bad seal in your lower unit.  Not uncommon, and I've heard it isn't real hard to replace yourself.

It is not leaking oil at all, that I know of.  I opened the drain plug, and milky watery stuff came out.  From what I have been told it should look like honey, or if it is black, just change it.  But milky is bad.

Trust me, its a bad seal.  Seen it lots of times.  Just because it isn't leaking oil doesn't mean water isn't leaking in.  That's what causes the milky color.

The first post is 100% correct.  Mix oil and water together and it turns white.  Oil might not be coming out, but water is getting in.  Seal or pickup tube leak that runs to the water pump.

Thanks everyone for all the replies, and Franklin, for offering to help fix!  some great people here on Maryland whitetail!

I found that the service and drain plugs did not have o-rings, and am really hoping that is where the water intrusion came from, gonna buy some new plugs with the o rings, and drain/service one more time, to be sure all water is out, than water test her on a hunt when I get back from Michigan.  Hopefully all will be well, and that was the problem.

If not, I will have to live with the trolling motor until I can get her fixed.

My 1st duck boat, and am getting ready to retire from the Navy, so...not a lot of money to be throwing at hunting (not more than I already have).  Purchased that quick set blind for it, had to redo trailer lights, and put new hubs/bearings on trailer.  Battery and troll motor also.  So into it for a bit of $$ now.  Not to mention the state took a few hundred and change for the dang registration.

I know, Murphys law, and it probably is a gasket or pickup tube, but keeping fingers crossed, that it was the drain plugs!

I'll let yas all know in about 3 weeks or so.

Best of luck to all you fellow waterfowlers out there!  By the way, I think the latest DU magazine issue was the best in a while!  Great articles for goose calling/water spreads etc!

I am stoked for that 3rd split!
