Reply with quote | #1 | I'm taking my son Sean there again. We went last year, saw a sika on the way in, but not while on stand. We did some bugling though. It sounds like the wx will be cool & dry for this Saturday. I can't wait. Good luck to evryone & be safe.
Who else is taking their kid?

The 7th??? Something special for BW??? Pete
Maryland DNR Announces Junior Deer Hunt DayAnnapolis, Md. (October 29, 2009) — The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites young hunters to participate in Maryland’s 15th Junior Deer Hunt day on Saturday, November 14, 2009.
Firearms hunting for white-tailed and sika deer will be open to hunters age 16 and younger who are accompanied by an unarmed, licensed (or exempt from license requirement) adult who is at least 21.
“Junior deer hunt day is dedicated to mentoring young people in the traditions of hunting and promoting an appreciation of our natural resources,” said Pete Jayne, DNR Wildlife and Heritage Service Associate Director for Game Management. “The day provides an opportunity for experienced adult deer hunters to pass on the knowledge and skills required for safe, effective and ethical hunting.”
All hunters participating are required to pass a hunter education course. The Maryland hunter education course includes instruction and testing in safety, hunter responsibility, firearms handling and the principles of wildlife management.
Successful junior deer hunters are encouraged to visit one of Maryland’s junior hunter certificate agents to receive a special certificate for any deer they harvest. This certificate is available to successful junior hunters during any of the Maryland deer hunting seasons.
Participating certificate agents, as well as complete bag limits, season dates, deer registration procedures and other information, can be viewed at http://www.dnr.maryland.gov/huntersguide.
The Maryland Guide to Hunting & Trapping 2009-2010 issued with each hunting license contains detailed information about all of Maryland’s hunting seasons.

Blackwater is a National Wildlife Refuge and they have their own seasons separate and outside of what DNR has. I believe you can get a permit the morning of the youth hunt. It's $5. |

It is a special hunt at Blackwater. State has nothing to do with it. |

I'm pretty sure Blackwater operates on a first come, first served basis. The youth has to be less than 16 at the time of the hunt. |

Reply with quote | #10 | That's pretty neat, I hadn't paid attention to that before. I know Eastern Neck has a youth day in October some time. Unfortunately, November 7 is also Youth waterfowl day (allowed as an extra day by Federal regs, I think?). On the one hand, its a shame it conflicts, but on the other hand, I guess it makes for a little less pressure on that day as well.
We'll be goose hunting and home by 10- the season's last soccer game, couldn't pull that off from Blackwater. Good luck!
